Children Often Experience Podiatric Issues

Nothing is more precious to us than our children. We work so hard to keep them safe, investing in car seats, monitors, outlet covers, and more for their safety. When it comes to their health care, we take them to practitioners who are specially trained to meet their unique needs. But what about your child's podiatric health? Are you taking steps to make sure that your son or daughter's feet are being protected? Children experience unique foot and ankle issues and are best served by a podiatrist who brings sensitivity, experience, and specialized education to diagnosing and treating young people.

Children should see the podiatrist for annual checkups. In between these visits, stay alert for the following:

Gait Abnormalities: When a child learns to walk, her normal gait will be different from an adult's, involving a wide-based stance and rapid, short steps. A more mature way of walking should develop naturally by the time she is 3 years old. If your child is still turning her feet in or out, toe walking, or limping by the time she is ready for preschool, a consultation with your podiatrist is in order.

Ingrown Toenails: Ingrown toenails lead to uncomfortable swelling and tenderness and possibly even infection. They are common among young children who frequently outgrow their shoes, and among older children who are able to manage their own trimming, but not yet to do the job well. Be sure to take your child for a proper fitting each time he or she needs new footwear. Supervise her toenail trimming or do the job yourself. Always use a clipper, rather than a scissors, and trim straight across without rounding the corners.

Warts and Fungal Infections: Kids often hang around barefoot in high-traffic areas like locker rooms and public pools, putting them at high risk of plantar warts and toenail fungus. Keep your child safe with an inexpensive pair of shower shoes and remind him never to share socks or shoes with anyone.

Foot and Ankle Injuries: Older children who are physically active are at risk of injury to their feet and ankles. Make sure that your child has the appropriate gear for his sport, and call the doctor if you notice cramping, pain, or limping.
