Walk Your Way to Good Health

After a long winter and weeks and months isolated at home, many Podiatry Group of Annapolis, P.A. patients are ready to get out. Summer is on the horizon, and, no doubt, some day trips are on your agenda. As you plan your next excursion, be sure to leave time in your itinerary for a walk or hike. Not only will this make you enjoy that ice cream cone even more, but it will provide excellent health benefits for your entire body and, in particular, your feet. Wondering how? Here are some answers from Anne Arundel podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver:

  1. Have you heard of osteoporosis? It is a dangerous illness that causes weakening of the bones and can lead to chronic foot and ankle injuries, including fractures. The best thing you can do to prevent osteoporosis, or its precursor, osteopenia, is weight-bearing exercise. The good news is you don’t have to go to the gym and lift barbells to add that weight-bearing exercise to your routine! When you walk, you support your entire body weight and stave off osteoporosis with each step!

  2. Walking stretches the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissues of the feet and ankle. It improves flexibility and increases mobility. It is important because mobility is essential to good health. Studies have linked a sedentary lifestyle to illnesses including hypertension, and diabetes, both of which can negatively impact foot health.

  3. Regular exercise and a healthy diet are the cornerstones of good physical health. Combined with a healthy diet based on colorful fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources, whole grains, and plenty of water, a daily walk will help you maintain a moderate weight – even if you do opt for that ice cream cone or another treat once in a while.
