Don’t Worry About Plantar Warts

Have you noticed a small, raised bump on the skin of the sole of your foot? You might have developed a plantar wart. While inconvenient or unattractive, plantar warts are not usually painful, leading patients to ignore the condition, putting themselves and others at risk. Instead, you should see a foot doctor like Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver at your earliest convenience. Your podiatrist is a medical expert with years of education and experience and is the best-qualified specialist to care for this part of your body.

The cause of plantar warts is a strain of the human papillomavirus. The virus enters the bloodstream through nicks, cuts, and tears in the skin so small you might not even notice them, but that’s all it takes. Once in the body, the virus causes small, rapidly growing clusters of cells to develop. These appear as small bumps you can see and feel. They can occur anywhere but are especially common on the feet, particularly on the sole. Warts are highly contagious and, without treatment, can multiply and spread quickly among members of your household.

If you notice something you suspect is a wart – or any change to the appearance or feel of the skin on your feet – you might be tempted to take the advice of so-called “experts” and the at-home solutions they post on the internet. It is never a good idea. At best, these approaches can be ineffective. At worst, they can cause burns and infection.
