Keep Feet Healthy with These Basic Steps

Like much in life, some aspects of foot health are beyond your control. Illness strikes and foot and ankle injuries occur. The good news is that there are simple, manageable steps that you can take to reduce your risk.

Here are three tips from James M. McKee, DPM, FACFAS:

1.      Practice good hygiene. Clean feet tend to be free from fungus and other infections. Wash your feet daily with antibacterial soap and dry them well, especially between the toes. Wear clean socks every day and change them if your feet tend to get sweaty and rotate your shoes regularly. Allow your shoes to air out between wearings and apply an antibacterial spray like Lysol to them daily. Wear sandals in locker rooms and other places where people tend to congregate barefoot. Tuck a pair of slippers into your bag if you’ll be staying at a hotel.

2.      Wear the right shoes. Save those high heels for special occasions or give them up entirely. They are responsible for a host of foot deformities. Instead, choose a pair of sensible shoes made of leather or fabric. Laces or straps will allow for a more customizable fit than loafers do. Prevent bunions and hammertoes by looking for shoes with a wide, roomy toe box. A low, chunky heel and rubber soles will improve stability and prevent falls. If you enjoy running or other exercise regularly, be sure to replace your athletic shoes at least once a year or after 500 miles.

3.      Learn to trim your toenails properly. Unlike fingernails, which are typically cut with a scissors and rounded at the corners, toenails should be trimmed straight across with clippers made for the job. This will minimize the possibility of painful ingrown toenails.
