Are you still working your way through your holiday gift list? Are you shopping for a gift for someone who is notoriously hard to buy for? Do you need an idea for a present that everyone loves? Foot pampering is the way to go! Here are three suggestions from James M. McKee, DPM, FACFAS for gifts that are sure to be a hit:

At-home pedicure kit: Put together a set of items that can be used to do a spa-style pedicure at home. Be sure to include toenail clippers, cuticle nippers, emery boards, a pumice stone for callus removal, scented lotion, and a couple of different polish colors for women. If your gift recipient has difficulty reaching their feet, offer to visit and do the job yourself.

Warm socks and slippers: Men and women with diabetes, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and other illnesses that affect circulation often feel cold in their extremities. Feet can be very uncomfortable, especially in winter. Wool or fleece socks can help, as can insulated slippers. If your gift recipient is a fall risk, you can help reduce their risk of foot and ankle injuries by choosing socks with non-skid rubber treads and slippers with thick soles.

New sneakers or athletic footwear: To prevent blisters and other problems, running shoes should be replaced at least once a year or every five hundred road miles, whichever comes first. Surprise someone you love with a spiffy new pair of kicks. Even better, take them to the store for a professional fitting. It’s not unusual for foot size to change as we age. Toss in a can of antimicrobial spray to reduce the risk of athlete’s foot and other infections.

Of course, the best way to keep feet, ankles, and lower legs in great shape is with regular visits to a board-certified podiatrist like Dr. James M. McKee. With years of training and experience, your foot doctor is the best-qualified medical professional to care for this part of your body. Schedule a convenient visit in our Solomons Island Road office.
