When you think about serious cancer, your mind might first go to the lungs, or the pancreas, or even the brain. But would you think of the feet? Melanoma of the foot might not get as much press as breast cancer, but it can be just as dangerous.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer, and it can develop on the feet. Fortunately, when caught early, it is treatable. Early detection is critical, which is why your podiatrist will always do a skin exam as part of your visit.

Like skin cancer anywhere, melanoma on the foot is typically the result of exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. Other causes include family history and prolonged exposure to carcinogens. You can reduce your risk, and that of your children, by applying sunscreen with a high SPF whenever your feet are exposed. Be sure to cover every bit from the ankles down, even in between your toes.

The first sign of melanoma is typically a change to an existing more. Be alert to:

  • A: Asymmetry – An asymmetrical shape can be an indication of a problem.

  • B: Border – Take note of a mole with an irregular border.

  • C: Color – A healthy mole usually only has one color.

  • D: Diameter – Any mole larger than a pea is cause for concern.

  • E: Evolving – Any changes to a mole, even those not listed above, should be evaluated by a doctor.

Your podiatrist will probably want to do a small surgical biopsy on your mole, and the result of that test will determine what, if any, treatment is appropriate.
