Only Treats – No Tricks! – For Kids’ Feet on Halloween

Are your kids planning on heading out for Trick or Treating on Halloween? From coast to coast, many communities are planning on moving forward with this treasured annual ritual. If you decide it’s safe for your family to participate, remember to wear your masks and maintain social distancing. Also, be sure to take steps to keep little feet and ankles safe while you’re out there. In their excitement, it’s easy for kids to sustain foot and ankle injuries. Here are some safety recommendations that Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver would like you to keep in mind:

  1. Costumes should stop at the knee. That means princess dresses and Jedi robes should never be long enough to trip on. Tripping and falling can lead to ankle sprains, foot fractures, and more.

  2. No costume footwear. Avoid high heels and shoe coverings. They can contribute to falls.

  3. Stick with sneakers and other safe, comfortable footwear options. Have kids wear socks to keep feet warm, dry, and blister-free. There’s going to be a long evening of walking ahead. If your podiatrist has prescribed custom orthotics for your son or daughter, this is a night to use them.

  4. Carry a strong flashlight to help your party see where they’re going, then insist kids stay with you--no running ahead.

If your child sustains a foot or ankle injury on Halloween or if you have a concern about the health and wellness of their feet, ankles, or lower legs, a visit with your foot doctor is in order. With years of specialized training and experience, a board-certified podiatrist like James M.
