September 22 was Falls Prevention Awareness Day. How much do you know about the risks that falls pose to feet and ankles and what you can do to stay safe?

Falls are a common cause of foot and ankle injuries in men, women, and kids, including ankle sprains and bone fractures. At a minimum, such an injury might leave you sidelined and needing crutches or a cast for weeks, unable to enjoy your usual daily activities. At their worst, they can require foot and ankle surgery to resolve.

You can reduce your risk of a fall by making a few simple changes to your environment, your footwear, and your lifestyle.

Environmental Changes:

  • Make sure your home is tidy. Eliminate tripping hazards by keeping floors free from clutter.

  • Inspect area rugs to be sure that edges lie flat. If they don’t, tack them down or roll them up and put them away.

  • Install grab bars in showers and tubs.

  • During the winter, keep walkways free from snow and ice.

Footwear Changes:

  • High heels increase unsteadiness by shifting the body’s center of gravity and reducing the foot’s contact with the ground. Save them for special occasions or remove them from your wardrobe entirely.

  • Opt for comfortable, sensible shoes that stay on your feet. Choose a pair with laces or straps for a snug fit. Skip flip-flops, which can slide off your feet and lead to a fall. Rubber soles will improve traction.

Lifestyle Changes:

  • Consider adding a gentle yoga or tai chi class to your exercise routine. Many people report this helps improve balance and flexibility.

  • See your podiatrist regularly. It is the very best thing you can do to keep your feet healthy and ready to see you through every day with strength and stability.
