Diabetes Poses Risks to Foot Health

Have you or a family member been diagnosed with diabetes? If so, you probably know that diabetes is a whole-body illness in which the pancreas, a small gland in the torso, is no longer able to produce adequate amounts of insulin. Insulin is a hormone critical in the regulation of levels of glucose in the blood stream. These out-of-control blood sugar levels are responsible for a host of complications throughout the body, including heart disease, kidney disease, skin conditions, and blindness. In the feet, diabetes leads to two particular and related risks: neuropathy and ulcers.

Neuropathy is a condition in which sensation is diminished, making it harder for people with diabetes to perceive discomfort associated with nicks, cuts, and other small injuries. Without that signal, these patients might not seek prompt treatment for their wounds. The reduced circulation associated with diabetes then poses a challenge to recovery. The injury becomes infected and medical intervention is necessary. Treatment with oral antibiotics is likely, but sometimes that’s not enough. If the wound refuses to heal, hospitalization for the delivery of intravenous medication is possible. Occasionally, even that approach doesn’t clear up the issue. Doctors work to preserve the affected limb, but amputation and even death can occur.

It is critical that individuals with diabetes take active steps to preserve and protect foot health. You must inspect your feet for problems daily. This is the best way to deal with them before they become severe. If limited flexibility or range of motion makes it hard for you to see your feet, ask a loved one for assistance or place a small mirror on the floor and hold your foot above it to see what’s going on.
