Learning More About the Symptoms of Diabetes

Every year, nearly 2 million Americans are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. This chronic illness has numerous complications, many of which negatively affect foot health. People with diabetes are unable to manufacture or properly use insulin. This impairs the body's ability to convert sugars, starches and other foods into energy and creates elevated blood sugar levels known as hyperglycemia. Long-term, uncontrolled hyperglycemia can cause damage to the eyes, heart, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels, as well as to the feet. To maintain good foot health, it's important to be able to recognize the symptoms of diabetes.

Some people are more at risk of developing diabetes than others. The single greatest risk factor is weight. People who are overweight or obese develop diabetes up to four times more often than their more average-sized peers. Other risk factors include family history, prior history of gestational diabetes, age (people over 40 are at higher risk), and ethnic profile. African Americans, Native Americans, and Latino men and women are at higher risk.

If you are exhibiting symptoms of diabetes, you should be tested as soon as possible. Be alert to:

  • tingling or numbness of the feet or hands which can indicate peripheral neuropathy

  • slow-to-heal wounds, especially on the feet

  • frequent urination

  • excessive thirst

  • extreme hunger

  • unexplained weight loss or weight gain

  • blurred vision

  • fatigue

Although it can be distressing to learn that you have diabetes, it is always better to have knowledge about your health than it is to be uninformed. A diabetes diagnosis is not catastrophic. Your physician will work with you to manage your blood sugar and your podiatrist will help keep your feet and ankles safe and healthy.

If you are concerned that you are exhibiting podiatric symptoms of diabetes, or if you have any other concerns about the health and well-being of your feet, ankles, or lower legs, the first thing to do is to schedule a visit with your foot doctor. With years of specialized training and experience, your podiatrist is the best-qualified medical professional to diagnose and treat any such issues.
