How Will You Keep Feet and Ankles Safe During Winter Sports?

As you consider which activities are safe during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, you might choose to engage in outdoor winter sports. If ski mountains, ice rinks, and other outdoor venues are open in your area, and your family decides winter sports are safe for you, remember to wear your masks and pack some hand sanitizer. Downhill and cross-country skiing, ice skating, hockey, and other winter sports are great fun, but they pose some risks to foot and ankle health. Foot and ankle injuries can occur. Be sure to take some steps to keep your feet and ankles safe. Here are some suggestions to keep in mind from Anne Arundel County podiatrists Dr. James M. McKee and Dr. Adam Weaver:

  • Check your gear well in advance of your next excursion. Make sure skis, boots, bindings, skates, and everything else is in good condition and that it fits well.

  • You’re going to need some healthy snacks and plenty of water for your big day. Good nutrition is always important, and plenty of hydration will help prevent foot cramps and other issues.

  • Stay safe from athlete’s foot and other fungal infections, which thrive in damp environments. Tuck a clean, dry pair of socks for everyone in that backpack.

  • Bring a foot first aid kit with you in case of a minor injury. You’ll want antibiotic ointment and bandages for small nicks or cuts, moleskin for bandages, and a pair of tweezers to remove any foreign objects.

Now is a great time to make sure your feet and ankles are illness and injury-free and ready for the season ahead.
