How Much Do You Know About Foot Health?

Your feet are among nature’s most complex structures. They contain more than one-quarter of the bones in your body, along with over 100 muscles, numerous tendons and ligaments, and miles of nerves. How much do you know about keeping feet healthy and safe? Here are some tips:

  1. Always wear rubber-soled shoes, even inside. They will help prevent foot and ankle injuries by reducing your risk of slipping and falling. Choose sensible shoes for everyday use; save those high heels for special occasions.

  2. You don’t have to live with foot pain. Many common causes can be addressed with the help of custom orthotics, prescribed and created by your podiatrist.

  3. Morning heel pain can mean the onset of plantar fasciitis, a common irritation of the soft tissue along the bottom of the foot. It’s not going to get better on its own, but your podiatrist can help.

  4. Prevent ingrown toenails by becoming expert at trimming. Always use a clipper, never scissors, and cut straight across. Don’t round the corners as you might on your fingers.

  5. Excess sweating is called hyperhidrosis. It can contribute to toenail fungus and unmanaged foot odor known as bromodosis. This is a medical condition and treatment is available.

  6. Visit your board-certified podiatrist at least once each year, more often if you have diabetes. With years of specialized training and experience, your foot doctor is the best-qualified medical professional to diagnose and treat any illnesses or injuries of your feet, ankles, and lower legs.
