Regular Foot Care Is Critical for Diabetics

You probably have a primary care physician who you see for regular check-ups and occasional issues, and a few specialists you call on for care of different parts of your body. Maybe you see an ophthalmologist for your eye care or an audiologist to help with hearing aids. A podiatrist is a specialist who is an expert in diagnosing and treating all illnesses, injuries, and infections related to the feet, ankles, and lower legs. Everyone – men, women, and children – should see a podiatrist for an examination at least once a year. This is especially critical for people with diabetes.

In your torso, you have a small gland called your pancreas. It is responsible for the production of insulin, a hormone necessary to regulate levels of glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. When the pancreas fails in part or in full, diabetes occurs. Blood glucose levels become challenging to regulate. Careful diet and medication are typically required.

Diabetes can create secondary illnesses throughout the body, including blindness, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease. In the feet, two particular complications are common: peripheral neuropathy and diminished circulation. Neuropathy is a loss of sensation. This means that those with diabetes are less able to feel the discomfort that would typically be associated with small nicks or cuts. Even something seemingly as harmless as a heel crack can result in a big problem due to the reduced blood flow caused by diabetes. Infection sets in and the small injury becomes a diabetic ulcer, a deep, painful wound that is hard to heal. Hospitalization, amputation, and even fatality can result.
